Port information & tips for Loreto
Loreto is a hidden gem on the east coast of the Baja California Sur peninsula and enchants visitors with its authentic Mexican charm on the Gulf of California. The oldest Spanish settlement in the region is picturesquely nestled between the majestic peaks of the Sierra de la Giganta and the glittering sea. Cultural treasures include the historic Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó as well as the informative Missions Museum, while the protected Bahía de Loreto National Park delights with its impressive biodiversity and the idyllic Isla Coronado. Since Loreto is a tender port, guests reach the Dársena de Loreto directly by boat. From this central landing point, the bustling Malecón and the charming old town are within easy walking distance in just a few steps.
Loreto is a charming destination in Baja California Sur, which cruise passengers from the DACH region typically reach by plane. Embarkation takes place in the picturesque Loreto Bay, where passengers are conveniently brought ashore to the Malecón by tender boat.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Loreto International Airport (LTO), located only about a 10-minute drive from the city center and beach communities. For travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, connecting flights via major US hubs such as Los Angeles (LAX) or Phoenix (PHX) are the most common options. Alaska Airlines, for example, flies directly to LTO from Los Angeles, and American Airlines from Phoenix.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Loreto International Airport (LTO), you can easily reach your hotel or go directly to the port. Taxis are available at the terminal and will take you to the city center for about 10-20 USD. In addition, local providers offer private shuttle services to take you to your accommodation or embarkation point comfortably and stress-free.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Loreto is highly recommended to start your cruise relaxed. A variety of hotels, from charming boutique accommodations to larger resorts, are located in and around Loreto, many of them close to the port or with good connections. This allows for a stress-free arrival and sufficient time to acclimatize before embarkation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Accordingly, plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
