Port information & tips for La Paz
La Paz is the charming capital of Baja California Sur and welcomes travelers as a relaxed jewel on the deep blue Gulf of California. The city impresses with its authentic Mexican atmosphere and its immediate proximity to the "Aquarium of the World," as Jacques Cousteau called the species-rich marine region. Absolute highlights include the extensive Malecón with its artistic sculptures, the historic Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de La Paz, and the dreamlike Playa Balandra. Cruise ships dock at the Terminal de Pichilingue, located about 18 kilometers north of the city center. Thanks to comfortable shuttle connections, visitors can reach the lively waterfront promenade and the cultural center in around 20 minutes for an unforgettable shore excursion.
The cruise port of La Paz, in the Baja California Sur region, is known as the gateway to the fascinating Sea of Cortez and impresses with its sheltered location. Since larger ships dock at the Terminal Pichilingue, located about 17 kilometers north of the city center, you can reach the charming capital comfortably via the well-developed coastal road.
Airplane
For travelers from the DACH region, arriving via Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is recommended; it is located about 170 kilometers to the south and is served by international hubs such as Mexico City or US airports. Alternatively, Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP) directly in La Paz offers convenient connections for domestic flights from Mexico City, with the travel time from the airport to the terminal being only about 30 minutes.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Los Cabos Airport, you can reach La Paz in about two and a half to three hours via Carretera Federal 1, thanks to modern shuttle services and private transfers. For the journey from the city center to the Terminal Pichilingue, regularly scheduled buses from the provider Ecobaja as well as taxis are available, covering the distance via Highway 11 in about 20 minutes.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight time from Europe and the time difference, arriving at least one day before embarkation is advisable to start your vacation relaxed. An overnight stay in one of the hotels along the Malecón waterfront promenade also offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the excellent regional gastronomy and the relaxed atmosphere of the city before departure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled for about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
