Santo Tomás de Castilla serves as an important gateway to the Caribbean coast of Guatemala and features a dedicated cruise terminal that opened in 2004, capable of handling up to two cruise ships simultaneously. However, the port area itself is primarily industrial, which is why transfers to attractions or surrounding cities are necessary.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, traveling by plane to Guatemala City is the most common route. La Aurora International Airport (GUA) is located approximately 283 to 303 kilometers from Santo Tomás de Castilla. Direct flights from Europe are typically available via Madrid or Mexico City. Further travel to the port is possible either by domestic flight to the nearby Puerto Barrios Airport (PBR), which is about 12.9 kilometers from the port, followed by a short taxi transfer, or via a longer road connection.
Transfer & Shuttle
Various transfer options are available from La Aurora Airport (GUA). The fastest option is a domestic flight to Puerto Barrios (PBR), which reduces travel time, including the transfer to the cruise terminal, to approximately 1 hour and 57 minutes to 1 hour and 59 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Guatemala City (e.g., Litegua Bus Station), with the journey to Santo Tomás de Castilla taking about 4 hours and 53 minutes. In addition, cruise lines often offer transfer services if flights were booked through them, and private transfer companies provide a comfortable ride directly to the port. From Puerto Barrios Airport or the city of Puerto Barrios itself, the cruise port can be reached by taxi in about 20 minutes.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight times from the DACH region and the subsequent multi-hour journey to the port, it is strongly recommended to arrive at least one day before embarkation and stay in a pre-cruise hotel. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise. Hotels are available in both Guatemala City and nearby Puerto Barrios. The immediate vicinity of the port of Santo Tomás de Castilla does not offer any tourist attractions within walking distance, making a stay in the surrounding cities a good choice for comfort and further exploration opportunities.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
