Gardner Bay on Española Island is a pristine natural paradise and one of the most spectacular stops on any Galápagos expedition. The bay impresses with its powdery white coral sand and crystal-clear, turquoise water, offering a unique, peaceful atmosphere thanks to a large colony of sea lions. Highlights include observing relaxed marine mammals, spotting the endemic Española mockingbirds, and snorkeling excursions to the species-rich Tortuga Rock. As the island is uninhabited, access is via Zodiac as a "wet landing" directly on the beach of Gardner Bay. Ships anchor in the protected bay, allowing travelers to immerse themselves immediately in the untouched wilderness and experience the fascinating wildlife up close without long distances.
Gardner Bay on Española Island is a pristine expedition stop, visited exclusively as part of cruises departing from the main ports of the Galápagos Archipelago. For guests from the DACH region, the journey begins via the Ecuadorian mainland hubs and leads to the embarkation ports on San Cristóbal or Baltra.
Airplane
The journey starts with a long-haul flight from Frankfurt, Munich, or Zurich to Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Quito or José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) in Guayaquil. From there, daily domestic flights with airlines such as LATAM or Avianca lead to San Cristóbal Airport (SCY), which, thanks to its location, is only a few minutes' drive from the port in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and serves as an ideal starting point for routes to Española Island.
Transfer & Embarkation
Upon arrival at San Cristóbal Airport, the transfer to the port usually takes less than ten minutes by taxi or the cruise line's shuttle bus. Since there is no permanent cruise terminal in Gardner Bay, embarkation first takes place onto the expedition ship in the port of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, while the actual shore excursion to the bay is later carried out comfortably using motorized inflatable boats, known as pangas.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the time difference and the long flight duration from Europe, arriving at least two days before the planned embarkation is advisable, with an overnight stay in the historic old town of Quito or in Guayaquil being a good option. Many guests also choose a pre-cruise overnight stay directly on San Cristóbal to explore the local wildlife in a relaxed manner before the start of the cruise and to guarantee a punctual embarkation without time pressure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
