Elizabeth Bay on the west coast of Isabela is a pristine natural paradise and one of the most spectacular destinations in the Galapagos Archipelago. The idyllic bay impresses with its peaceful atmosphere and dense mangrove forests, which provide a protected habitat for numerous animal species. Highlights include the Mariela Islands with their significant Galapagos penguin colony, as well as the lagoons populated by sea turtles and rays. Since there is no conventional pier in this strictly protected ecosystem, ships anchor directly in the bay. Exploration is done comfortably by panga (dinghy), which allows travelers exclusive insights into the wild flora and fauna due to the immediate proximity to the shore and guarantees an authentic expedition experience far away from any civilization.
Elizabeth Bay on Isabela Island is a spectacular anchorage for expedition ships and is exclusively visited as part of Galápagos cruises. Since it is a protected natural area without classic terminal infrastructure, embarkation for these itineraries usually takes place in the main ports of the islands Baltra or San Cristóbal.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region is via the international airports of Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE), from which daily domestic connections to the Galápagos airports of Baltra (GPS) and San Cristóbal (SCY) are available. The flight time from the Ecuadorian mainland is approximately two hours, with renowned airlines such as LATAM or Avianca serving the archipelago regularly.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Baltra Airport (GPS), travelers take a short transfer to the Itabaca Channel and from there a ferry and bus to the respective pier where the Zodiac inflatable boats are ready for embarkation. As logistics on the islands are strictly regulated, most cruise lines organize the complete transfer from the airport directly to the ship, guaranteeing a relaxed arrival.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and specific flight schedules, at least one overnight stay in Quito or Guayaquil is recommended before the onward flight to the Galápagos Islands. Many guests also take the opportunity to spend a few days in advance in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz or in Puerto Villamil on Isabela to adapt optimally to the climate and experience the unique wildlife even before the official start of the cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
