Puerto Limón is the vibrant gateway to Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, captivating visitors with its lush nature and warm Afro-Caribbean culture. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the green Parque Vargas, with its majestic palms and free-roaming sloths, as well as the lively Mercado Municipal, which offers authentic insights into local life. Cruise ships dock at the central Hernán Garrón Salazar Terminal, from which the city center, with its shops and the striking cathedral, is easily accessible on foot in just about five minutes.
Puerto Limón on the Caribbean coast is Costa Rica's most important cruise port and welcomes guests at the Hernán Garrón Salazar terminal, located directly on the edge of the lively old town. Thanks to well-developed national roads and modern transfer options from the capital San José, the journey is a scenic experience through the tropical rainforest.
Airplane & Transfer
Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José is located around 160 kilometers to the west and is served from Frankfurt or Zurich with direct flights or convenient connecting flights. From there, you can reach the port in about a four-hour drive via private shuttle services, taxi, or organized cruise line buses. For a particularly time-saving arrival, regional airlines such as Sansa offer short domestic flights to the local Limón Airport (LIO), which is only a 10-minute drive from the cruise terminal.
Car & Rental Car
Via the well-developed National Route 32, you can travel directly from San José to Puerto Limón, with the route offering spectacular views of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. In the immediate vicinity of the terminal, secure parking spaces are available for long-term parkers, and renowned international car rental providers maintain stations in the city. This allows for a flexible arrival as well as the uncomplicated return of the vehicle immediately before embarkation.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the transfer time from the capital and to avoid stress caused by traffic volume on Route 32, arriving a day early is highly recommended. A stay at a hotel in San José or directly in Puerto Limón ensures a relaxed start to your vacation and also provides the opportunity to experience Costa Rica's famous biodiversity before boarding. Many hotels in the region are geared toward cruise guests and are happy to assist in organizing the final transfer to the ship.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
