Santa Marta is considered the oldest city in Colombia and is a fascinating jewel on the Caribbean coast at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada. The city impresses with its authentic charm, colorful alleys, and a lively atmosphere that immediately captivates visitors. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the magnificent Catedral de Santa Marta, the historic Museo del Oro Tairona, and the bustling Parque de los Novios. Cruise ships dock at the Terminal de Cruceros de Santa Marta. From there, the historic center is easily accessible in about ten minutes on foot thanks to its central location, providing ideal access to the sights and the Malecón de Bastidas waterfront promenade.
The Santa Marta cruise port in Colombia is primarily accessible by plane for guests from the DACH region, as it has its own cruise terminal and is conveniently located near the city center. Since ships usually dock at the container terminal, a short shuttle takes passengers to the city center near the Old Customs House.
Airplane
Arrival is via Simón Bolívar International Airport (SMR) in Santa Marta, which is located approximately 13 to 16 kilometers south of the city center and the port. There are currently no direct flight connections from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, but there are good connection options via major hubs such as Bogotá, Medellín, or Miami. The modern airport was recently renovated and has a single terminal.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Simón Bolívar Airport (SMR), you can reach the cruise port and the city center comfortably by taxi in about 15 to 17 minutes. The cost for a taxi ride is between 10 and 12 US dollars. In addition, private transfer services and shuttles are available, which can take you directly to your hotel or the terminal and are also bookable around the clock.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in Santa Marta on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise and offers the opportunity to explore the oldest surviving city in Colombia. In the revitalized old town and the popular resort of El Rodadero, you will find a growing selection of charming boutique hotels.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
