Cruise port Isla Providencia

Getting to the idyllic island of Providencia, a true Caribbean gem of Colombia, is a small but rewarding journey, as direct flights or traditional cruise calls for large ships are not possible. Visitors from the DACH region primarily reach the island via the neighboring island of San Andrés, which serves as a hub. Cruise ships calling at Providencia usually tender their guests ashore to the main town of Pueblo Viejo, as there are no large terminals.

Airplane

The nearest international airport is Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport (ADZ) on San Andrés. Direct flights from Europe to San Andrés are rare; travel usually involves a connection in mainland Colombian cities such as Bogotá, Medellín, or Cartagena, or through hubs like Panama City (PTY). From San Andrés, you can easily reach Providencia's El Embrujo Airport (PVA) with a short domestic flight. The airline Satena offers regular flights for this route, which take only about 20 to 37 minutes. It is recommended to book flights early, as the small aircraft (often for 19-20 passengers) sell out quickly and there may be a baggage restriction of about 10 kg. When traveling to Providencia, plan sufficient time (at least three hours) for the transfer between flights on San Andrés.

Ferry

As an alternative to flying, it is possible to travel from San Andrés to Providencia by ferry. The crossing with a catamaran, operated by providers such as Conocemos Navegando, takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. Ferries run several times a week, mostly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, departing from San Andrés at 8 a.m. Please note that the sea between the islands can sometimes be rough, and travel by plane is more advisable for sensitive stomachs; seasickness tablets are even offered to passengers on the ferries.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the multi-stage journey and the potential need for customs and immigration processing (including the tourist card, which must be purchased before the flight to San Andrés), it is advisable to plan an overnight stay on San Andrés before your onward flight or ferry crossing to Providencia. San Andrés Airport (ADZ) is just a few minutes' walk or a short taxi ride from numerous hotels. Popular options in the immediate vicinity of the airport or in the city center of San Andrés include Hotel Portobelo beach, Posada Amaripucci, or Decameron Isleño. This way, you can start your Caribbean adventure on Providencia feeling relaxed.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
