Port information & tips for Puerto Montt
Puerto Montt is the impressive gateway to the Chilean Lake District and marks the beginning of the wild fjords of Patagonia. The port city impresses with its picturesque location on the Reloncaví Sound and, thanks to the snow-capped Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, offers a spectacular natural backdrop as well as an authentic maritime flair. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the famous Angelmó fish market with its culinary specialties and the Plaza de Armas with the historic cathedral made of larch wood. Cruise ships use the pier of the Empresa Portuaria Puerto Montt (Empormontt). Since this central Muelle de Pasajeros is located directly on the Costanera waterfront promenade, guests can reach the lively city center and local sights after a short, easy walk.
Puerto Montt, in the Chilean Lake District, is an ideal starting point for cruises toward the Patagonian fjords, thanks to its central location and international flight connections. The cruise terminal is sheltered in the Canal de Tenglo and is easily accessible directly from the city center.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region typically involves flying via Santiago de Chile (SCL) followed by a domestic flight to El Tepual Airport (PMC) in Puerto Montt. The flight time from the capital is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The regional airport is located about 16 kilometers northwest of the cruise port, and numerous daily connections allow for flexible travel planning.
Transfer & Shuttle
From El Tepual Airport, you can reach the Empresa Portuaria Puerto Montt terminal in about 25 to 30 minutes by taxi or private transfer service. The route follows the V-590 road and the Ruta 5 highway directly into the port area. Additionally, many cruise lines offer coordinated group transfers that pick up guests directly at the airport upon landing.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight distance and the time difference, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation. Staying overnight in Puerto Montt or in Puerto Varas, just 20 kilometers away, provides extra security in case of flight delays and also allows for a relaxed visit to the famous Angelmó fish market in the immediate vicinity of the pier.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will typically include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
