Chaitén is the fascinating gateway to untouched Chilean Patagonia and is picturesquely situated at the foot of the volcano of the same name on the legendary Carretera Austral. The charming port city impresses with its authentic atmosphere and, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, offers a spectacular natural backdrop for explorers. Impressive highlights in the immediate vicinity include the world-famous Parque Nacional Pumalín with its thousand-year-old Alerce trees, as well as the spectacular climb to the crater of the Chaitén volcano. Additionally, the nearby Playa Santa Bárbara invites you to take walks with panoramic views. Cruise ships usually use the Muelle de Chaitén, from which the city center is easily reachable in a few minutes on foot and provides direct access to local specialties.

The cruise port of Chaiten in Patagonia, Chile, is a gateway to a pristine natural landscape and is typically reached from the DACH region via Fly & Cruise. Due to its remote location and multi-stage journey, careful travel planning and often arriving the day before is recommended.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region primarily involves a long-haul flight to Santiago de Chile (SCL). From there, a connecting flight takes you comfortably to El Tepual International Airport (PMC) in Puerto Montt. The journey continues with local airlines such as Pewen or Aerocord from La Paloma Airfield or El Tepual Airport to the smaller Nuevo Chaitén Airport (WCH), which takes about 35 to 45 minutes. Due to the limited capacity of the small aircraft, early booking of this final leg is strongly advised.
Ferry
The ferry represents an essential connection to Chaiten and is an impressive way to experience the picturesque fjord landscape. Direct ferries operated by Naviera Austral run from Puerto Montt to Chaiten, with the crossing usually taking 6 to 10 hours and often occurring overnight. Booking ferry tickets in advance is advisable, especially during high season, to secure a spot.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the long international flights and the necessary connecting links to Chaiten, a relaxed arrival with an overnight stay in Santiago de Chile or Puerto Montt is highly recommended. This allows for a stress-free transition between different modes of transport and a rested start to your cruise experience. In Chaiten itself, there are also simple accommodations available if arrival directly at the port is required.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
