Useful tips
Returning to the ship
Virassaia is not a typical port of embarkation or disembarkation for cruises, but rather a small, remote riverbank village in the Brazilian Amazon. It is typically visited as a port of call for Zodiac excursions during expedition cruises, which usually start from larger cities such as Manaus. Therefore, travel for guests from the DACH region focuses on the flight to the starting point of their Amazon expedition.
Airplane
Travel to the starting point of an Amazon cruise usually takes place via Manaus International Airport (MAO), which is reached from the DACH region with stopovers, for example in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Due to the long flight duration of over 12 hours, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended to start your adventure in a relaxed manner.
Transfer to the ship
From Manaus International Airport (MAO), you can easily reach the cruise terminal in the city center of Manaus by taxi or pre-arranged transfer. The journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. From there, your actual expedition journey begins upstream, taking you to remote places like Virassaia.
Pre-cruise hotel
An overnight stay in Manaus before the cruise is advisable due to the long flight times and the time difference. Numerous hotels in Manaus offer comfort and allow you to explore the city and its sights, such as the famous Teatro Amazonas opera house, before starting your unforgettable expedition journey.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
From the Port of Virassaia in Angra dos Reis, you can reach the picturesque coastal region and the city center particularly comfortably thanks to short distances and a variety of connections.
Water Taxis and Escunas
Regional water taxis and traditional escunas are available directly at the piers, providing a convenient way to reach the paradise beaches of Ilha Grande and the surrounding islands.
Taxi
Numerous licensed taxis wait for passengers directly outside the port grounds and will take you safely to the city center or the cultural sights of Angra dos Reis in just a few minutes.
On Foot
You can reach the lively center and the first waterfront promenades after an approximately 20- to 30-minute walk, while simultaneously enjoying your first impressions of the Brazilian coastal landscape right by the water.
To make the most of your stay in Virassaia, we recommend a combination of the historical heritage of Angra dos Reis and the untouched nature of the offshore islands.
Historical Center of Angra dos Reis
The charming city center impresses with its well-preserved colonial buildings and sacred treasures such as the Convento do Carmo, and it can be easily explored on a walk thanks to its direct location at the harbor.
Ilha Grande & Vila do Abraão
This paradisiacal, car-free island can be reached by boat in a short time and, with the picturesque main village of Vila do Abraão, offers the perfect starting point for hikes through the lush rainforest.
Praia de Lopes Mendes
Often recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, this stretch of coastline impresses with its fine white sand and turquoise water; furthermore, the bay is ideal for a relaxing day of swimming in a dreamlike natural setting.
Virassaia Community
The idyllic riverside community of Virassaia on the Amazon is easily accessible from the anchorage in just a few minutes using the ship's own Zodiacs and offers a deep, authentic insight into the everyday life of the local "Caboclos". A visit is particularly worthwhile thanks to the warm atmosphere and the opportunity to get to know the local village school and the traditional production of manioc flour up close. The infrastructure is kept pleasantly original and also invites you to discover handmade souvenirs made from natural materials at small stalls. Ideally, start your shore excursion in the morning to experience the lively school activities and return to the ship relaxed in time for lunch.
The way back to the Virassaia pier is extremely relaxed thanks to the manageable distances and well-organized boat transfers. Plan a small time reserve for the journey back to the tender dock to enjoy the picturesque backdrop of the coast in peace until departure.
Water Taxis and Boats
From the surrounding bays and beaches, local water taxis and Flexboats will take you directly back to the central pier of Virassaia. These boats are easy to find at the marked collection points on the main beaches and offer a fast and convenient way to reach the meeting point on time for your return journey to the ship.
On Foot
From the village center and local shops, you can easily reach the port area in a few minutes on foot. The paths are clearly laid out and lead you directly to the pier, and you can also use the prominent signs that show the way to the secured landing stage for the tender boats.
Tender Service and Shuttle
