Port information & tips for Rio Grande

Rio Grande is the oldest city in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and stands out as a significant maritime gateway at the entrance to the Lagoa dos Patos. The historic port city combines colonial heritage with the rugged beauty of the South Atlantic coast and offers a special travel experience thanks to its authentic atmosphere. Outstanding attractions in the immediate vicinity include the renowned Museu Oceanográfico Prof. Eliézer de Carvalho Rios and the expansive Praça Tamandaré in the heart of the city. Cruise ships dock at Porto Novo, which is located directly on the edge of the historic center, providing passengers with convenient access to the charming alleys, local markets, and cultural treasures of the city.

Rio Grande, located in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, is primarily a major cargo port that also welcomes cruise ships. For guests from the DACH region, arrival by plane is recommended, as the port has no direct international flight connections.

Airplane

The nearest major international airport for travelers from the DACH region is Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) in Porto Alegre. This is located approximately 243 to 319 kilometers from Rio Grande, with the direct drive taking about 4 to 5 hours. Direct flights from the DACH region to POA are rare; connecting flights are usually required. For the fastest connection, it is possible to take a domestic flight from Porto Alegre (POA) to the nearby Pelotas Airport (PET), followed by a bus journey to Rio Grande.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Porto Alegre Airport (POA), travelers can easily reach Rio Grande by bus, which often requires a transfer in Pelotas and takes a total of around 5 hours. Alternatively, private transfer services offer a comfortable and direct ride to the cruise port, which is particularly pleasant after a long-haul flight and ensures a stress-free arrival.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the additional transfer time from Porto Alegre to Rio Grande, an overnight stay before embarkation is highly recommended. Various hotels are available in Rio Grande, allowing for a relaxed start to your cruise. Numerous accommodation options can also be found in Porto Alegre if an intermediate overnight stay is preferred there to break up the journey.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
