Copacabana is arguably Rio de Janeiro's most famous district and the epitome of Brazilian joie de vivre and stunning coastal landscapes. Visitors can also explore the historic Forte de Copacabana at the southern tip, stroll across the iconic wave mosaic of Avenida Atlântica, and enjoy the view of the nearby Sugarloaf Mountain. Cruise ships dock at the modern Pier Mauá in the Port of Rio de Janeiro, from where Copacabana is easily accessible in about 20 to 30 minutes by car, while the historic old town is located directly at the terminal.

Airplane
For international guests from the DACH region, traveling by plane is the most common option. Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport (GIG) is the main airport and is located approximately 15 to 25 kilometers from Pier Mauá. The drive to the cruise terminal takes about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. The closer Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), primarily used for domestic flights, is particularly conveniently located to the port at only about 2 to 3 kilometers away, with a travel time of 10 to 15 minutes. Given the long flight from Europe, it is strongly recommended to arrive at least one day before embarkation to start your cruise adventure relaxed.
Transfer & Shuttle
Various transfer options are available from Galeão International Airport (GIG), including taxis, ride-sharing services like Uber, and private shuttle services. There are also air-conditioned "Frescao" buses (Empresa Real) that run along the coast to the hotels, as well as public buses. From Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), you can also easily reach Pier Mauá by taxi or Uber. Additionally, the modern VLT (Light Rail/Tram) efficiently connects the port area with the city center and the metro system, providing a practical option for short distances.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
An overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Rio de Janeiro is highly recommended after a long-haul flight from the DACH region to prevent jet lag and to explore the city before the cruise. Popular neighborhoods such as Copacabana, Ipanema, or the city center offer a wide selection of hotels. Many of these accommodations are well-connected and allow for a convenient taxi ride or an organized transfer to Pier Mauá, which is about 20 minutes from Copacabana depending on the location.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
