Wadi as-Subu is a fascinating destination on the shores of Lake Nasser, taking travelers deep into the Nubian history of Egypt. The atmosphere on-site is characterized by the silence of the desert and the majestic sight of ancient monuments that stand out impressively against the deep blue of the water. Cultural highlights include the imposing Temple of Ramses II with its striking Avenue of Sphinxes, as well as the Temple of Dakka and the Temple of Maharraqa. Cruise ships dock directly at the Wadi as-Subu pier, from where the historical sites can be easily reached in just a few minutes on foot or during a short ride through the golden desert sand thanks to their immediate proximity.
Wadi as-Subu is a significant historical site on the Nile and a popular stop for Nile cruises. For international guests, arrival at the "port" primarily refers to the embarkation points for Nile cruise ships in the cities of Luxor or Aswan, from where the ships head to this fascinating temple. There are no separate terminals in the sense of ocean cruise ports; the ships dock at the respective riverbanks.
Airplane
For arrival from the DACH region, the international airports of Luxor (LXR) and Aswan (ASW) are the most relevant destination airports. Direct flight connections are rare; arrival usually involves a layover, often in Cairo. Luxor Airport (LXR) is located about 7 to 11 kilometers from the city center and the ship docks, which means a travel time of about 10 to 20 minutes. Aswan Airport (ASW) is also located very close to the city center and the Nile cruise ship docks, with a transfer time of approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Transfer & Shuttle
From the airport in Luxor or Aswan, you can easily reach your cruise ship via a pre-booked transfer or taxi. Many tour operators and cruise lines offer organized transfers that are coordinated with your flight times. This is recommended to avoid waiting times or price negotiations upon arrival. A private transfer from Luxor Airport to the cruise ship docks, for example, costs between 15 and 25 USD and takes about 10 to 20 minutes. A private transfer is also a comfortable option in Aswan to reach embarkation stress-free.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and potential flight schedule changes, it is advantageous to spend at least one night in a hotel in Luxor or Aswan before embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your Nile cruise and also provides the opportunity to gather first impressions of the respective city. Many hotels in both cities offer a comfortable stay and sometimes also shuttle services to the airport or the ship docks.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
