Port information & tips for Edfu

Edfu is a history-steeped stop on the Nile and an indispensable highlight of any Egypt cruise between Luxor and Aswan. This charming small town on the west bank impresses with its authentic atmosphere and the lively bustle of traditional markets and fertile riverbanks. The region's architectural jewel is the imposing Horus Temple, one of the best-preserved sacred buildings of ancient Egypt, which leaves a lasting impression thanks to its massive pylons. River cruise ships dock directly at the Edfu Boat Landing on the banks of the Nile. From this central mooring point, travelers can easily reach the nearby city center and the famous temple complex in just a few minutes using a traditional horse-drawn carriage, the kalesche.

Edfu is a significant port of call for Nile cruises in Egypt and is generally reached by DACH guests as part of a Fly & Cruise trip via the international airports of Luxor or Aswan. Direct embarkation in Edfu is uncommon for international travelers; cruises usually start in Luxor or Aswan.

Airplane

The nearest international airports for a Nile cruise are Luxor International Airport (LXR) and Aswan International Airport (ASW). Many European cities offer connecting flights to Luxor or Aswan. Luxor is located about 120 kilometers north of Edfu, and Aswan is about 100 kilometers south. The flight time from the DACH region, including a layover, is at least 6-8 hours.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Luxor or Aswan airport, the transfer to the ship is usually organized by the cruise line or tour operator. These transfers are often already included in the travel price and bring you comfortably to the cruise ship moorings. The travel time from Luxor airport to the port is about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic, and from Aswan about 20 to 30 minutes. Private taxi services or shuttles can also be arranged locally.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from the DACH region and to ensure optimal acclimatization, we recommend booking a pre-cruise hotel in Luxor or Aswan. This allows for a relaxed start to the trip and also offers the opportunity to gather first impressions of Egypt's impressive culture and history before embarkation. Many cruise lines offer corresponding hotel packages.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
