Port information & tips for Tromsø
Tromsø, the glamorous "Gateway to the Arctic," welcomes travelers as Norway's northernmost major city with a unique blend of untouched nature and urban lifestyle. The city impresses with its spectacular location amidst majestic fjords and offers an incomparable atmosphere thanks to its vibrant culture. Absolute highlights include the iconic Arctic Cathedral with its modern architecture, the Polaria experience center, and the Fjellheisen cable car, which offers a wide view over the Arctic metropolis. Larger cruise ships dock at the Breivika terminal, from which the city center, about four kilometers away, is easily accessible by shuttle bus; additionally, smaller ships often dock directly at the central Prostneset terminal in the heart of the action.
Tromsø is the vibrant gateway to the Arctic and, thanks to its modern infrastructure, an excellently accessible starting point for Northern Norway cruises. Depending on the size of the ship, guests dock either at the central Prostneset terminal in the heart of the city or at the Breivika port located about four kilometers to the north.
Airplane
Tromsø Airport (TOS) is located only about five kilometers from the terminals and is regularly served from major hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, or Zurich. Thanks to the short distance, you can reach the city center or your berth comfortably in about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or the official airport shuttle bus, Flybussen.
Transfer & Shuttle
From the airport, the city bus line 42 offers a direct connection to the Breivika cruise terminal, while the central berths in Prostneset are ideally integrated into the city center's transport network. Many cruise lines also provide their own shuttle services, which take guests from central meeting points directly to the gangway, ensuring a smooth start to their holiday.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
As the weather in the Arctic can be changeable, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation and staying in one of the numerous hotels in the city center. This provides security in the event of flight delays and also allows you to visit local highlights such as the Arctic Cathedral or take a trip on the Fjellheisen cable car before official departure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled for about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
