Port information & tips for Sandnes
Sandnes is situated at the picturesque end of the Gandsfjord and serves as the charming gateway to the fascinating natural landscape of southwest Norway. The city impresses with an inviting combination of modern design, vibrant urbanity, and a relaxed atmosphere right by the water. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the award-winning science center Vitenfabrikken and the famous Langgata, one of Norway's longest pedestrian streets, which invites you to take a leisurely stroll among traditional wooden houses. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Skansekaien in the inner harbor, meaning the city center and all major attractions can be easily explored on foot in just a few minutes thanks to the prime location.
The port of Sandnes, often used as an alternative to busier Stavanger, welcomes cruise guests in a central location directly at the Somaneset Cruise Terminal on Strandkaien. Thanks to its modern infrastructure and direct connections, the port is easily accessible, with ships docking directly at the quay.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Stavanger Airport (SVG), located only about 13 kilometers from Sandnes. For a convenient onward journey from the airport to the center of Sandnes, you can use bus line 42 from Kolumbus, which takes you to the Helikopter Service station in around 28 minutes and costs approximately 49 NOK. Alternatively, a taxi will take you directly to the terminal in about 15 minutes, with costs ranging between 260 and 320 NOK. For long-haul flights from the DACH region, arriving the day before is recommended to ensure a relaxed start to your cruise.
Train
The Sandnes sentrum station is located within a very short walking distance of the cruise port, allowing for an uncomplicated arrival by train. From here, there are regular and fast train connections to Stavanger, with the journey taking only about 15 to 16 minutes.
Car
Sandnes is excellently connected to the Norwegian national road network via the European route E39, ensuring a smooth arrival with your own vehicle or a rental car. Parking facilities are available in the city center of Sandnes, such as the Ovalen P-hus, which is located in the immediate vicinity of shops and services. Additionally, there are larger parking lots, for example on Jernbaneveien, which are free of charge at night and subject to a fee during the day, and are located close to the harbor.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
