Kirkenes is the fascinating gateway to the Arctic, located far above the Arctic Circle on the Norwegian-Russian border. This unique location gives the city an incomparable flair of wild tundra, deep blue fjords, and a spirit of Nordic adventure. Cultural and nature-oriented highlights include the famous Snowhotel Kirkenes, the Grenselandsmuseet, and the historical Andersgrotta, which also offers exciting insights into regional history. Cruise ships usually dock at the Holmengrå terminal, located about two kilometers from the city center. Thanks to short shuttle rides or a walk through the Arctic landscape, travelers can easily reach the cozy city center while experiencing the untouched nature of the high north at close range.

Returning to the ship
Kirkenes, located in the far northeast of Norway and known as the turning point of the coastal mail ship routes, is a unique cruise port near the Finnish and Russian borders. The cruise terminal is centrally located and allows for convenient access to the city, which can be reached in about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the pier.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Kirkenes Airport Høybuktmoen (KKN), located approximately 12 to 15 kilometers from the port. For travelers from the DACH region, flight connections usually go through Oslo (OSL), with daily connecting flights to Kirkenes. From summer 2025, Finnair will also offer connections via Helsinki (via Ivalo).
Transfer & Shuttle
From Kirkenes Airport (KKN), you can easily reach the terminal or the city by Airport Bus (Flybussen), which is available for every arrival and takes about 20 minutes. Alternatively, taxis offer a quick connection in approximately 13 minutes. Many cruise lines, such as Hurtigruten and Havila, also organize direct bus transfers from the ship to the airport and vice versa.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Central Europe, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Kirkenes is recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise while providing the opportunity to explore the Arctic border region. Numerous hotels in Kirkenes are geared toward cruise guests and sometimes offer their own transfer options.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
