Cruise ships use the pier of Leknes Havn directly in Gravdal, from where the town center of Leknes, about four kilometers away, is easily accessible by shuttle bus or taxi and serves as an ideal starting point for further exploration of the archipelago.
The port of Gravdal, often referred to as Leknes/Lofoten, is a major port of call for cruise ships in the stunning archipelago of the Lofoten. The terminal is conveniently located between the towns of Gravdal and Leknes on the island of Vestvågøy, although the actual sights of the region are spread across the islands and require a planned arrival and local mobility.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, traveling by plane is the fastest option. The nearest airport is Leknes Airport (LKN), located about 6-7 kilometers from the port. There are no direct flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, but there are good connections via Oslo (OSL) or Bodø (BOO) with connecting flights by regional airlines such as Widerøe to Leknes (LKN) or Svolvær (SVJ). From Leknes Airport, you can easily reach the port area in Gravdal by public bus line 766 (travel time approx. 11 minutes) or by taxi (approx. 6 minutes, cost approx. 280-350 NOK). Another airport on the mainland is Harstad/Narvik Airport (EVE), from where you can reach the Lofoten by bus (line 300) in about 2-3 hours.
Rental Car & Local Exploration
Since the most beautiful beaches and picturesque fishing villages of the Lofoten Islands are scattered, a rental car is the ideal choice for exploring the region flexibly. Major car rental companies can be found at Leknes Airport (LKN). Booking in advance is strongly recommended, as the availability of rental cars, especially during high season, can be very limited. The European route E10 connects the Lofoten and leads through most major towns, allowing you to easily reach destinations such as the Lofotr Viking Museum, Haukland Beach, or Nusfjord. Please note that roads on the Lofoten are often narrow and speed limits should be observed.
Ferry Arrival & Pre-Cruise Stay
For a relaxed arrival and to fully enjoy the unique landscape, a pre-cruise stay of at least one night in the Lofoten or in Bodø is recommended. Travelers arriving by train from southern Norway to Bodø (the terminus of the Norwegian rail network) can take a scenic ferry crossing from there to Moskenes in the Lofoten. This ferry connection (Bodø-Moskenes, approx. 3-4 hours travel time) is particularly attractive for travelers with their own car or a rental car and offers breathtaking views of the approaching island chain. From Moskenes, the port of Gravdal can be reached via the E10 in about one hour. For the ferry, especially in the summer months, online booking of a vehicle space is advisable.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
