Port information & tips for Ålesund

Ålesund is considered the architectural jewel of Norway and impresses with its globally unique concentration of magnificent Art Nouveau buildings directly on the North Atlantic. The city extends picturesquely across several islands and offers an incomparable maritime atmosphere thanks to its location between deep blue fjords and imposing mountain peaks. Highlights include the famous Aksla viewpoint with its panoramic views over the archipelago, the fascinating Jugendstilsenteret, and the nearby Atlanterhavsparken. Cruise ships dock directly in the city center at the Storneskaia-Pier or the Prestebrygga. This central location allows travelers to comfortably reach the charming alleys and sights in just a few minutes' walk and to enjoy the Nordic hospitality immediately.

The cruise port of Ålesund impresses with its central location directly in the heart of the Art Nouveau city, making the Stornespiren and Skansekaia terminals easily accessible on foot. Arriving from the DACH region is straightforward thanks to the well-developed infrastructure and proximity to the regional airport.

Airplane

Ålesund Vigra Airport (AES) is located about 18 kilometers northwest of the port and is regularly served via hubs such as Oslo or Copenhagen. From there, you can reach the docking points in the city center directly in about 20 to 25 minutes by taking the Flybussen airport bus or a taxi, with the journey through modern undersea tunnels already offering initial views of the island world.

Car

Arrival with your own vehicle is via the scenic European route E136 or the coastal road E39, which connect Ålesund with Norway's larger cities. For parking your car, the central Aksla parking garage in the city center is ideal; additionally, various short-term and long-term parking spaces with modern camera detection are available in the port area for a smooth process.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the impressive Art Nouveau architecture and the usually necessary flight connections, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended. Numerous hotels are located in the immediate vicinity of the terminals, allowing for a relaxed start to the cruise while also giving you time to visit the Aksla city mountain or the Atlantic Sea Park.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan accordingly and allow sufficient time for your journey to the port, keeping in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
