Port information & tips for Tvøroyri
Tvøroyri is an untouched gem on Suðuroy, the southernmost island of the Faroe Islands, and delights travelers with its authentic Nordic atmosphere. Its idyllic location on the Trongisvágsfjørður fjord offers a breathtaking backdrop for nature lovers, thanks to the surrounding green mountains and dramatic basalt formations. Highlights include the picturesque Hvannhagi valley with its undisturbed views of the neighboring islands, as well as the historic wooden church Tvøroyrar Kirkja and the fascinating basalt rocks in nearby Froðba. Cruise ships dock directly at the port of Tvøroyri (Tvøroyrar Havn), from where guests can easily reach and explore the charming town center with its historic trading houses and cozy cafes in just a few minutes on foot.
Tvøroyri in the Faroe Islands is a unique destination whose accessibility requires careful planning, as the journey usually involves a combination of flight and ferry. The port is centrally located in the small town, and the embarkation points are easily accessible.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region is primarily via the Faroe Islands' only airport, Vágar Airport (FAE). This is usually reached with stopovers, often in Copenhagen (CPH). From Vágar Airport, you can reach Tórshavn, the capital on the island of Streymoy, by bus or taxi in about 45 to 60 minutes to take the ferry connection to Suðuroy.
Ferry to Suðuroy
The most important part of the journey to Tvøroyri is the ferry crossing from Tórshavn on the island of Streymoy to Krambatangi on Suðuroy. The ferry company Smyril Line operates this route with the MS Smyril, which completes the journey in about two hours. It is advisable to check ferry times in advance and book tickets if necessary, especially if you wish to take a vehicle. From Krambatangi, it is only a few minutes' drive to the port of Tvøroyri.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Connections
Given the multi-stage journey and ferry times, an overnight stay in Tórshavn on the day before embarkation is recommended. This allows for a relaxed start and sufficient buffer for potential travel delays. In Tvøroyri itself, the port is easily accessible, and taxis or local buses are usually available from the Krambatangi ferry pier to bridge the short distance to the cruise terminal. Parking facilities for short- and long-term parkers are available near the port of Tvøroyri.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
