Port information & tips for Klaksvik

Klaksvík, the second largest town in the Faroe Islands, is a fascinating destination in the North Atlantic, picturesquely nestled between dramatic mountain peaks on the island of Borðoy. The charming fishing town impresses with its authentic Nordic atmosphere, colorful houses, and views of the deep blue fjords, which inspire both tranquility and a sense of adventure. Cultural highlights include the architecturally impressive Christianskirkjan with its imposing altarpiece, as well as the traditional Föroya Bjór brewery and the nearby Klakkur viewpoint. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Molubakkin Wharf, from where the inviting town center with its cafes and shops can be reached in just a few minutes on foot, providing a perfect starting point for unforgettable island experiences.

Klaksvik in the Faroe Islands welcomes cruise guests as an important fishing port and gateway to the northern islands. Docking usually takes place at the North Harbour, from where a free shuttle bus comfortably takes guests to the easy-to-navigate city center.

Airplane

Arrival from the DACH region is primarily via the Faroe Islands' only airport, Vágar Airport (FAE). Direct flights are possible with Atlantic Airways, Icelandair, Scandinavian Airlines, or Widerøe AS, often with connections via Copenhagen or Reykjavík. Due to the long journey, an overnight stay in the Faroe Islands before embarkation is recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed.

Rental Car & Island Transport

From Vágar Airport (FAE), you can reach Klaksvik in about 1 hour and 10 to 15 minutes of driving over approximately 77 to 83 kilometers. The route leads through impressive sub-sea tunnels such as the Vágatunnilin and the Norðoyatunnilin, which connects the island of Borðoy with Eysturoy and links Klaksvik directly to the road network. A rental car allows for maximum flexibility to explore the breathtaking island world. Please note that tolls apply for the sub-sea tunnels and a parking disc is required for parking in certain zones in Klaksvik, which is available free of charge at banks or tourist information offices.

Transfer & Bus

As an alternative to a rental car, various transfer options are available from Vágar Airport (FAE). A taxi or private shuttle to Klaksvik takes about 1 to 1.25 hours and costs between 800 and 1100 DKK. Advance reservation is strongly recommended, as taxis are not always directly available at the airport. For budget-conscious travelers, a trip on the public buses (Strandfaraskip Landsins) is available, which will take you to Klaksvik in about 1.5 to 2 hours with a change in Tórshavn. In addition, there is the possibility of a helicopter transfer, which covers the distance in just 24 minutes and operates several times a week.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
