Port information & tips for Skagway (AK)

Skagway is the fascinating gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush and impresses with the nostalgic charm of the turn of the century amidst Alaska's dramatic mountain scenery. The historical backdrop with its characteristic wooden boardwalks conveys an authentic pioneer atmosphere and, thanks to the well-preserved architecture, simultaneously offers deep insights into the legendary gold mining era. Outstanding highlights include the historic Red Onion Saloon, the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and the famous White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, whose historic trains start directly at the harbor. Cruise ships dock at the Railroad Dock, Broadway Dock, or Ore Dock, making the city center easily accessible on foot or with a short shuttle thanks to its immediate proximity.

Skagway is located at the northern end of the Lynn Canal and impresses with its protected location in the middle of the Inside Passage, which features three central docking berths for cruise ships. The Railroad Dock, Ore Dock, and Broadway Dock terminals are located in the immediate vicinity of the historic town center and are excellently accessible thanks to short walking distances.

Airplane

Guests from the DACH region usually travel via the international hubs of Vancouver (YVR) or Seattle (SEA) to Juneau Airport (JNU). The onward journey to Skagway Airport (SGY) is easily made with regional airlines such as Alaska Seaplanes in around 45 minutes, with the local airport located only about one and a half kilometers from the cruise terminals, guaranteeing short transfer times.

Ferry & Ship

A particularly impressive arrival is made possible by the Alaska Marine Highway System, which regularly connects Skagway with other ports such as Juneau or Haines. These state ferries dock directly in the harbor area and offer travelers the opportunity to experience Alaska's fjord landscape from up close even before the actual cruise begins.

Auto & Highway

Skagway is one of the few places in Southeast Alaska directly connected to the continental road network and is accessible via the Klondike Highway (Route 2). The approximately 175-kilometer route from Whitehorse in the Yukon offers a spectacular drive through the wilderness, with parking available for travelers in the harbor area as well as at selected locations in town.
