Kailua-Kona is the sun-drenched heart of the west coast of Big Island and a history-steeped highlight of every Hawaii cruise. In close proximity to the shore, cultural treasures such as the historic Huliheʻe Palace, the Mokuaʻikaua Church as the oldest Christian church on the islands, and the sacred temple complex Ahuʻena Heiau await. Since cruise ships drop anchor in the protected bay, guests reach the central Kailua Pier comfortably and directly by tender boats. This landing stage is located right in the heart of the town, making charming cafes, local boutiques, and the sights along Alii Drive reachable in just a few steps.

Airplane
Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) is located about 14 kilometers north of the port and is the primary arrival point for international guests. Travelers from the DACH region usually reach the island via US hubs such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Seattle, as well as via inter-island flights from Honolulu. From the airport, the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway (Hwy 19) leads directly south to the port area in approximately 20 minutes.
Transfer & Shuttle
Numerous taxis, rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, and specialized shuttle providers like SpeediShuttle are available for the convenient trip from the airport to the pier. These services can be easily booked in advance to ensure direct transport to the terminal or your booked hotel, while local Hele-On buses offer a budget-friendly alternative for getting around the region.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and significant time difference, a stay of at least two nights before the cruise is highly recommended. Many hotels and resorts are located along Alii Drive within walking distance of the Kailua Pier, allowing for a stress-free start while providing time for acclimatization and exploring the famous Kona coffee plantations.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will generally provide a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
