Port information & tips for Natchez (MS)

Chagulak Island is a pristine natural paradise in the middle of Alaska's Aleutian Islands and belongs to the impressive Islands of Four Mountains. The volcanic island impresses with its rugged wilderness and a majestic atmosphere that fascinates adventurers and nature lovers alike. Highlights include the massive breeding colonies of northern fulmars and the spectacular cliffs, which also offer breathtaking views of the striking volcanic cone. Since the island is uninhabited, shore excursions take place via Zodiac landings directly on the natural shores. Ships use protected anchorages off the coast, which provides an authentic expedition experience thanks to the direct connection to the wilderness and more than compensates for the lack of a traditional city center through pure nature experiences.

Chagulak Island in Alaska is an uninhabited island in the Aleutian archipelago and typically serves as a destination for expedition cruises, rather than a traditional embarkation port with direct transport links. Travel for guests from the DACH region therefore focuses on flight connections to the starting points of these specialized voyages.

Airplane

Travel for DACH guests to this remote region of Alaska usually begins with international flights to major US hubs such as Seattle (SEA) or directly to Anchorage (ANC), Alaska's largest airport. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is a major hub for the state and is served by several major airlines, making it a convenient gateway to further travel destinations.

Onward journey to expedition ports

Since Chagulak Island has no direct passenger terminals or road connections, travel to the actual cruise ship usually takes place via more remote ports that serve as starting points for Aleutian expeditions. One possible starting point is Unalaska/Dutch Harbor (DUT), which can be reached via connecting flights from Anchorage (ANC) with Alaska Airlines. These flights take about three hours and allow for onward travel into the Aleutians. Other Alaskan ports such as Juneau, Whittier, or Seward can also be starting points for longer cruises that include the Aleutian chain.

Pre-cruise hotel

Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the often complex onward travel to the remote embarkation ports in Alaska, a pre-cruise overnight stay of at least one night is strongly recommended. Hotels in Anchorage provide a good base for acclimatization and for preparing for the onward journey, especially for connecting flights to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, where accommodation options are limited.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination area – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
