Alpena (Michigan), a unique cruise port on the shores of Lake Huron, is primarily accessible to guests from the DACH region by plane followed by onward travel. Cruise ships anchor in Thunder Bay, from where passengers can easily reach the city center and the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center via shuttle boats.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region typically takes place via Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), the largest international hub in Michigan. From there, daily connecting flights are available with Delta Connection (operated by SkyWest Airlines) to Alpena County Regional Airport (APN). The flight takes approximately 1 hour and 7 minutes. APN regional airport is located only about 11 kilometers west of Alpena city center and is directly connected to the port area via a short 15-minute taxi ride or by rental car.
Car
For travelers who prefer a rental car, Alpena is well-connected via the road network. The main thoroughfares US-23 (Chisholm St/State St) and M-32 (Washington Ave) lead directly into the city center. Numerous public parking options are available in Downtown Alpena, including several long-term parking lots. In particular, Lot 3 offers year-round daily and overnight parking. A rental car also provides flexibility to explore the picturesque surroundings and attractions of Northern Michigan.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region and possible flight delays, an overnight stay in Alpena on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This ensures a relaxed start to your cruise. In Downtown Alpena, you will find various hotels that are often just a few minutes' walk from the marina area, such as the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alpena - Downtown. Many of these accommodations offer comfortable amenities and are ideal for exploring the charming city before your cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
