Port information & tips for Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand's charming capital, framed by green hills, and delights as the world's southernmost capital with a blend of maritime flair and urban elegance. The city impresses with its picturesque location on the Cook Strait and, thanks to its compact size, offers a wonderful atmosphere for strolling between art galleries and first-class cafés. Outstanding highlights in the immediate vicinity include the impressive National Museum Te Papa Tongarewa and the historic Wellington Cable Car, which takes passengers to the Botanic Gardens. Cruise ships usually dock at Aotea Quay, from where the vibrant city center and the famous waterfront are easily accessible in just a few minutes thanks to comfortable shuttle buses or a short walk.

Wellington welcomes cruise ships at the central Aotea Quay in the heart of the New Zealand capital, from where the city center can be reached in just a few minutes. Thanks to its location as a major transportation hub between the North and South Island, the port is excellently connected to the international flight network as well as the national rail and road network.

Airplane

Wellington International Airport (WLG) is located approximately eight kilometers southeast of the port and is served from the DACH region via hubs such as Auckland, Sydney, or Melbourne. From the airport, you can easily reach the terminal at Aotea Quay in about 20 minutes by taxi or ridesharing service; additionally, the Airport Express bus connects the airport to the nearby main railway station at regular intervals.

Train & Shuttle

Wellington Railway Station is the central arrival point for the Northern Explorer long-distance train from Auckland and is located just a few hundred meters from the port grounds. Many cruise lines provide free shuttle buses from this hub for the short trip to the ship, while local taxis are available for individual transfers at the station forecourt.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long flight duration from Europe and the time difference, we recommend arriving at least two days before embarkation and staying at a hotel in the Central Business District (CBD). Guests arriving by rental car via State Highway 1 will find numerous accommodations with parking facilities in the city center, from which the cruise terminal and waterfront attractions are easily accessible.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
