Port information & tips for Santander
Santander, the elegant capital of Cantabria, enchants visitors as one of the jewels on the northern coast of Spain. The city impresses with its location on one of the most beautiful bays in the world and offers a harmonious blend of royal history, modern architecture, and extensive sandy beaches. Right on the waterfront, the futuristic Centro Botín art center makes a striking impression, while just a short walk away, the magnificent Palacio de la Magdalena and the gothic Catedral de Santander invite exploration. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Estación Marítima, situated directly in the heart of the city. Thanks to this prime location, travelers can easily reach the bustling promenades of the Paseo de Pereda and the historic center on foot in just a few moments.
The port of Santander offers excellent accessibility for cruise guests from the DACH region, as the cruise terminal, the Estación Marítima, is centrally located in the city. Thanks to the short distances, travelers can get directly from the ship into the vibrant city center with its diverse attractions.
Car
The port of Santander is excellently connected to the Spanish road network, particularly via the A-8 (Autovía del Cantábrico) and A-67 (Autovía Cantabria-Meseta) highways. When approaching from the direction of the A-67 or S-10 highways, simply follow the signs for "Santander" and then the clearly visible yellow "Ferry" signs with a car symbol to reach the port area. Direct long-term parking spaces are generally not available at the terminal, but various secure parking garages can be found near the port and in the city center, offering convenient parking options.
Train
Santander's main railway station is centrally located at the "Plaza de las Estaciones", only about a ten-minute walk from the cruise terminal. The Spanish national railway company Renfe connects Santander with cities such as Madrid, Palencia, and Valladolid, while FEVE offers connections to Bilbao and Oviedo. After arrival, you can easily reach the terminal by taxi or enjoy a short walk along the promenade.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Aeropuerto Seve Ballesteros-Santander (SDR), located practically just 2 to 5 kilometers from the city center and the port. After landing, the ALSA bus takes you to the La Lonja stop near the port in just about six minutes, or the S4 bus takes you to the central bus station, directly opposite the main railway station, in less than 20 minutes. Alternatively, taxis are available to transport you comfortably to the terminal in 10 to 25 minutes. For a relaxed arrival on longer flights from the DACH region, we recommend booking a pre-cruise hotel in Santander so you can start your cruise well-rested.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Please plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
