Port information & tips for Pasaia
Pasaia is a hidden gem on the Basque coast and serves as a picturesque gateway to the Bay of Biscay. Its location in a deep, sheltered bay gives the town an enchanting fjord-like character, combining maritime tradition with authentic Spanish charm. Nearby, the fascinating Albaola Itsas Kultur Factoria – The Sea Factory of the Basques and the historic Victor Hugo House invite discovery, while the picturesque district of Pasaia Donibane delights with its colorful fishermen's houses. Cruise ships dock at the central pier of Pasai San Pedro, from where the sights are within walking distance and convenient connections to the nearby, elegant San Sebastián are available.
Pasaia, located near charming San Sebastián, is an active seaport with excellent connections. Cruise ships dock in the Pasajes San Juan district, which is characterized by its picturesque surroundings and proximity to the city; additionally, the terminal offers basic services such as a lounge and shops.
Car
Traveling to the port of Pasaia is convenient thanks to direct connections to major transport axes. Via the N-1 national road as well as the AP-8 (from the direction of Bilbao) and A-15 (from the direction of Pamplona) motorways, you can easily reach the Gipuzkoa region and the port. Since the port is also an industrial site, parking is available directly near the harbor, for example in Pasai Donibane. For a visit to San Sebastián, Park & Ride at the Illunbe Stadium with subsequent use of public transport is recommended due to local environmental zones.
Train
The nearest train station, "Pasaia," is connected via the Euskotren (Line E2, "Topo Line") and is located about one kilometer from the center of Pasaia. From the main station San Sebastián-Donostia, a major ICE hub with direct connections from all over Europe, you can reach Pasaia comfortably by train in just 11 to 12 minutes. Alternatively, direct bus lines, such as line 27 or E26, run from San Sebastián to the port in about 10 to 17 minutes.
Airplane
Several airports are available for international guests from the DACH region. The closest is San Sebastián Airport (EAS) in Hondarribia, around 11 to 18 kilometers from Pasaia. It primarily offers domestic flights, with some international connections to London. A taxi ride to Pasaia takes about 21 minutes and costs 30-40 euros. Alternatively, the French Biarritz Airport (BIQ, approx. 35-40 km from San Sebastián) with European connections and the larger Bilbao Airport (BIO, approx. 80-100 km from San Sebastián) with a wide range of international flights are ideal. There are also good bus connections to San Sebastián from Biarritz and Bilbao. Arriving the day before is recommended for long-haul flights to enjoy a relaxed overnight stay in San Sebastián and the short transfer time to the port on embarkation day.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
During the trip, the following also applies: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
