Port information & tips for Melilla
Melilla is a fascinating Spanish enclave on the North African coast and a brilliant hidden gem for explorers in the western Mediterranean. The city impresses with its unique location at the transition of two continents, combining European elegance with an inviting, multicultural atmosphere. Impressive highlights include the massive fortress complex Melilla la Vieja as well as the magnificent modernist architecture around the Plaza de España, which makes the city Spain's most significant Art Nouveau metropolis after Barcelona. Cruise ships dock at the central Muelle de Ribera in the Port of Melilla, from where the historic quarters and the lively center can be easily reached on foot in just a few minutes thanks to the immediate proximity.
The port of Melilla, a Spanish exclave on the North African coast, is easily accessible thanks to good ferry connections from the Spanish mainland and its own airport. The modernized port area with its cruise terminal is centrally located and allows a convenient walk to the city center.
Airplane
Melilla Airport (MLN) is located only about 3 to 4 kilometers southwest of the city center and the port. Direct flights from the DACH region do not usually exist; arrival usually takes place with a layover at a Spanish mainland airport, for example in Málaga or Madrid. From Melilla Airport, you can easily reach the terminal by taxi in about 10 to 15 minutes, with costs between 6 and 15 euros.
Ferry
The ferry is an important travel option to Melilla and connects the city with the southern Spanish ports of Málaga, Motril, and Almería. Shipping companies such as Baleària, Trasmediterránea, and Naviera Armas offer regular crossings, which take between five and eight and a half hours depending on the route. The ferry terminal in Melilla is located directly at the port and is within walking distance of the city center, and long-term parking spaces and taxi connections are also available.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the travel combination of flight and ferry as well as the potentially long transfer times and layovers, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise, especially if your flights or ferry connections arrive late or depart early. Hotels near the port or the city center offer a comfortable base to explore Melilla even before embarkation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
