Port information & tips for Bilbao

Bilbao is the cultural heart of the Basque Country and impresses with its perfect symbiosis of avant-garde architecture and historical depth. The city on the River Nervión radiates a dynamic flair and offers an impressive backdrop thanks to its location between green hills and the coast. Highlights include the famous Puente Bizkaia transporter bridge, the picturesque Old Port of Algorta, and the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum with its iconic titanium facade. Cruise ships dock at the modern Getxo Cruise Terminal, which is located about 15 kilometers from the city center. Thanks to efficient shuttle buses and the excellent metro connection, visitors can reach the vibrant center and the historical old town Casco Viejo comfortably in about 25 minutes while enjoying the convenience of first-class port access.

The cruise port of Bilbao in Getxo impresses with its modern infrastructure and its direct location on the Bay of Biscay, approximately 15 kilometers from the vibrant city center. Thanks to excellent connections to international air travel and the Spanish highway network, arrival for guests from the DACH region is comfortable and straightforward.

Airplane

Bilbao Airport (BIO) is located about 20 kilometers from the cruise terminal and is served directly from major hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, and Zurich. From the airport, you can easily reach the terminal in Getxo in around 25 minutes by taxi or use the airport bus A3247, which takes you directly to the city center and the central bus station.

Train & Metro

Bilbao-Abando main station is the central arrival point for long-distance trains from Madrid or Barcelona and offers travelers a direct connection to the local transport network. From the city center, Metro Line 1 takes about 25 minutes to Neguri station in Getxo, from where you can reach the cruise terminal directly after a short taxi ride or a brief walk.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to Bilbao's cultural diversity and Basque gastronomy, we recommend arriving a day before embarkation and staying overnight in the city center or in picturesque Getxo. Many hotels near the port are prepared for cruise guests and offer assistance in organizing shuttle services directly to the ship, guaranteeing a relaxed start to your vacation.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during your voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
