Venice is Italy's legendary lagoon city and an incomparable highlight of any Mediterranean cruise. The UNESCO World Heritage Site captivates with its unique flair of glittering canals, magnificent palazzi, and romantic alleys. Absolute highlights include the majestic St. Mark's Square with St. Mark's Basilica, the grand Doge's Palace, and the iconic Rialto Bridge. Today, cruise ships use the modern berths in Porto Marghera or the Fusina Terminal at the edge of the lagoon. Thanks to efficient shuttle connections and water taxis, visitors quickly reach the historic center, with the crossing already providing initial panoramic views of the floating city and offering an inspiring introduction to this cultural treasure.
Venice, one of the most fascinating cities in the world, is easily accessible for cruise passengers from the DACH region. Since 2021, large cruise ships no longer dock directly in the historic city center, but primarily use the port of Marghera (Terminal VTP - Venezia Terminal Passeggeri). Smaller ships or ferries occasionally use other docking locations.
Car
Thanks to the well-developed Italian highways, Venice is easily accessible by car. The A4 (Turin-Trieste), the A27 (Belluno-Venice), and the A57 (Tangenziale di Mestre) lead directly to the Venice region and the mainland port of Marghera. Take the "Venezia/Porto" or "Marghera" exit. Numerous secure long-term parking spaces are available for cruise passengers at the VTP Terminal Marghera, and various private Park & Cruise providers near the port offer shuttle services to the terminal.
Train
The most relevant train station for cruise passengers is Venezia Mestre, which is a major hub for long-distance trains from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. From there, you can easily reach the VTP Terminal Marghera by taxi in about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a local bus from Venezia Mestre station to the terminal, or continue by train to the main station Venezia Santa Lucia and organize a water taxi transfer from there to explore the city beforehand.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), located only about 15 kilometers from the VTP Terminal Marghera and served by direct flights from many German, Austrian, and Swiss airports. From VCE Airport, you can reach the terminal directly by taxi in about 20-30 minutes. In addition, cruise lines often offer their own transfer buses. Another option is the ATVO Express Bus, which takes you from the airport to Venezia Mestre train station, from where continuing to the terminal is straightforward. For longer flights, we recommend arriving a day early and staying overnight in Venice or Mestre to start your cruise relaxed.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed check-in time slot with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
