Port information & tips for Triest

Trieste is the glamorous gateway to the Adriatic and impresses as the former most important port city of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy with magnificent architecture and a unique literary heritage. The atmosphere at the harbor is characterized by an elegant blend of Viennese coffee house culture and Italian joie de vivre, where the deep blue sea reaches directly up to the historical backdrop. Fascinating highlights in the immediate vicinity include the impressive Piazza Unità d’Italia, the ancient Teatro Romano, and the majestic hill of San Giusto with its cathedral. Cruise ships dock directly at the Stazione Marittima at Molo dei Bersaglieri, which is located in the heart of the city and, thanks to its first-class location, enables a direct walk of only a few meters into the vibrant center.

The Port of Trieste impresses with its extraordinary location directly in the historic city center at the Stazione Marittima, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the famous Piazza Unità d’Italia. Thanks to its proximity to the borders of Austria and Slovenia, arrival from the DACH region is particularly straightforward and offers various comfortable options.

Car

From the direction of Germany and Austria, arrival usually takes place via the Tauernautobahn A10 and the A23 (Palmanova-Tarvisio), while travelers from Switzerland use the A4 via Venice. Guarded long-term parking spaces are available directly at the port and at Molo IV, which can often be conveniently reserved online in advance. In addition, specialized park-and-cruise service providers offer a direct transfer from secured parking spaces to the terminal.

Train

The main station Trieste Centrale is an important hub and is easily accessible from cities like Munich or Vienna with direct connections or short transfers in Villach. Since the station is only about one kilometer away from the Stazione Marittima, guests can reach the check-in in a few minutes by taxi or after a short walk along the waterfront promenade.

Airplane

Trieste Airport (TRS) is located around 33 kilometers northwest of the port and is directly connected to the rail network via its own Trieste Airport station, allowing travelers to reach the center in about 30 minutes. Alternatively, Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is an option, located around 150 kilometers away and ensuring a good connection to the cruise lines in Trieste through regular shuttle buses or private transfer services.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
