Port information & tips for Portovenere

Portovenere, located on the Ligurian coast known as the "Gulf of Poets", is a radiant jewel of the Italian Riviera and part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The charming fishing village captivates with its brightly colored facades of tower houses, winding alleys, and a history-steeped atmosphere right on the azure sea. Cultural highlights include the iconic Church of San Pietro on a prominent rocky outcrop, the legendary Grotta di Byron, and the majestic Castello Doria, which offers a wide panoramic view. Cruise ships use Portovenere as a tender port, with boats bringing passengers directly to the Banchina di Portovenere at Molo Doria. This central mooring point leads guests directly into the historic heart of the town and allows for an effortless exploration of the sights on foot.

Portovenere is a picturesque, medieval town on the Ligurian coast and a UNESCO World Heritage site. As a tender port, cruise ships anchor in the bay, and guests are brought by tender boats directly into the heart of the village at the main promenade, Calata Doria. There, a charming, pedestrian-friendly center awaits you with colorful houses, shops, and restaurants. There are no specific "terminals" in the traditional sense for large cruise ships, as landing is handled via tender boat. Arriving the day before is always recommended for long-haul flights to start your vacation in a relaxed manner.

Car

Arriving in Portovenere by car is via the A12 (Genoa-Livorno) or A15 (Parma-La Spezia) highways. Take the "La Spezia" exit, from where the SS370 state road leads directly toward Portovenere. The scenic route along the Gulf of the Poets takes about 20 minutes from La Spezia. Please note that the historic center of Portovenere is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) and only residents are allowed to drive there. Visitor parking lots are located outside the village center, such as the "Golfo" parking lot or zones P1, P2, and P3, which charge a fee. Especially during the high season, finding a parking space can be difficult, so it is often recommended to park your car in La Spezia, for example at the Mirabello parking lot or under the La Spezia Centrale train station, and continue by bus or ferry.

Train

Portovenere does not have its own train station. Alternatively, taxis and private transfers are available directly in front of the station, bringing you to the harbor in about 16 minutes. A scenic ferry connection from La Spezia to Portovenere is also available.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
