Port information & tips for Palau (Sardinia)
Palau is the picturesque gateway to the La Maddalena Archipelago and a glamorous highlight on the North Sardinian coast. The charming port town impresses with its crystal-clear, turquoise water and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere that invites you to stroll through its welcoming alleys. Impressive highlights in the immediate vicinity include the famous granite formation Roccia dell’Orso with its wide panoramic views, as well as the historic fortress Fortezza di Monte Altura. Cruise ships dock directly at the Porto di Palau, allowing travelers to reach the lively waterfront promenade, first-class restaurants, and direct boat connections to the archipelago conveniently in just a few minutes on foot.
Palau in Sardinia is a picturesque starting point for cruises, especially to the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago. The port, primarily a ferry port, is well integrated into the Sardinian infrastructure and allows for a pleasant journey.
Car
Palau is easily accessible via the SS125 state road, which runs along the east coast of Sardinia. Coming from the north, use the SS133 and SS133bis, which lead directly to Palau. In the port area and the immediate vicinity, there are various public parking lots, often subject to a fee, offering short- and long-term parking options. It is recommended to look for a parking space early, especially during the high season.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB), located approximately 40 to 50 kilometers south of Palau. From there, seasonal direct connections are available from the DACH region. The travel time by car or taxi is about 45 to 60 minutes. In addition, there are regular bus connections (e.g., ARST) from Olbia to Palau, which represent a cost-effective transfer option.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the transfer time from the airport and to ensure a relaxed start to your cruise, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is recommended. Both in Olbia and directly in Palau, you will find a good selection of hotels for every budget. This not only provides time for acclimatization but also the opportunity to explore the charming surroundings before embarkation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
