Port information & tips for Thira (Santorini)

Santorini is the radiant pearl of the Cyclades and inspires as one of the most spectacular travel destinations in the Mediterranean. The island impresses with its unique location on the edge of a sunken caldera and offers an incomparable atmosphere thanks to the snow-white architecture set against the deep blue Aegean panorama. Absolute highlights include the charming alleys of Fira, the striking Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, and the world-famous photo motifs in picturesque Oia. Since ships lie at anchor in the caldera, passengers reach the Old Port (Skala) conveniently by tender boat. From this landing stage, a modern cable car leads directly into the lively center of Thira in just a few minutes, making the shore excursion both comfortable and combined with a fantastic view of the sea.

Santorin is primarily visited by cruise ships as a tender port, with disembarkation taking place either at the Old Port below Fira or at the Athinios ferry port, depending on the cruise line. The island is excellently connected to the European transport network thanks to its international airport and regular ferry connections.

Airplane

Santorini International Airport (JTR) is located about six kilometers from Fira and is served directly during the summer season by numerous airports in the DACH region such as Frankfurt, Berlin, or Vienna. From the terminal, you can easily reach the port facilities by taxi or private transfer services in a travel time of around 15 to 20 minutes; additionally, public buses offer regular connections to the central bus station in Fira.

Ferry & Transfer

Travelers staying on the Greek mainland use the daily ferry connections from the port of Piraeus (PIR) near Athens, which reach Santorin in a travel time of about five to eight hours. At the arrival port of Athinios, sufficient taxis and buses are available to take passengers via the serpentine road directly to the island's central starting points or to the corresponding piers.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Arriving the day before is highly recommended due to Santorin's spectacular location and as a safeguard against flight delays. Many accommodations in Fira or Imerovigli also offer exclusive shuttle services to the cable car or to the port of Athinios, ensuring a completely stress-free transition to the cruise ship.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
