Santorini is arguably the most spectacular island of the Cyclades and welcomes travelers with a globally unique backdrop amidst the deep blue Aegean. The dramatic caldera captivates with brilliant white houses, striking blue-domed churches, and an incomparable Mediterranean flair. Outstanding sights include the charming capital Fira, the picturesque village of Oia, and the prehistoric archaeological site of Akrotiri. Cruise ships drop anchor in the bay, while tender boats bring guests to the Skala Pier (Old Port). From there, the modern cable car or the historic stepped path leads comfortably up to the center of Fira, located about 270 meters higher, providing the perfect starting point for individual explorations of the entire island.
Santorini is an extraordinary cruise destination in the Aegean, where ships mostly anchor due to the deep caldera and transport guests by tender boat to the ports of Skala or Athinios. While individual travelers usually arrive at the historic port of Skala directly below the capital Fira, the port of Athinios serves primarily as the arrival point for ferries and organized excursions.
Airplane
Santorini International Airport (JTR) is located about six kilometers east of Fira and is served directly by numerous airports in the DACH region such as Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Zurich during the season. From the terminal, you can reach the capital comfortably in about 15 minutes by taxi or private transfer; additionally, regular KTEL buses run to the central bus station in Fira, from where you have direct access to the cable car towards the port of Skala.
Ferry & Transfer
For guests combining their arrival with a stay in Athens or on other Cycladic islands, the port of Athinios is the central hub. The crossing from the port of Piraeus takes between five and eight hours depending on the type of ship, with Athinios located about eight kilometers south of Fira and offering a direct connection for taxis and hotel shuttles thanks to well-developed serpentine roads. Public parking for rental cars is also available on site if you wish to explore the island individually beforehand.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the unique topography and the tender process, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation to avoid possible delays with the cable car or boat transfer. An overnight stay in Fira or picturesque Oia also offers the opportunity to enjoy the famous sunset over the caldera in peace before taking the cable car down to the port of Skala the next day.
