Port information & tips for Patmos

The holy island of Patmos is considered the "Jerusalem of the Aegean" and impresses with its deep spirituality as well as its untouched, natural beauty. In the midst of the glittering island world of the Dodecanese, the charming port town of Skala welcomes visitors with bright white houses, narrow streets, and an inviting Mediterranean atmosphere. Among the impressive highlights are the imposing Monastery of Saint John and the mystical Cave of the Apocalypse, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites and reflect the island's rich history. Cruise ships dock directly at the quay in Skala or use the convenient tender service to the harbor pier, from where the lively city center with its cafes and boutiques is immediately reachable on foot, while also providing ideal connections to the picturesque upper town of Chora.

The picturesque port of Skala on Patmos is the charming gateway to the island and welcomes cruise guests directly in the heart of the island's activity, with short distances to local sights. Since the island does not have its own airport, arrival from the DACH region is via a combined flight and ferry connection, which begins your holiday with an idyllic sea voyage.

Airplane

For travel from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the airports of Samos (SMI) or Kos (KGS) are ideal, as they are served directly during the season by airlines such as Lufthansa, Condor, or Austrian Airlines. Alternatively, a flight to Athens International Airport (ATH) followed by a domestic flight to one of the neighboring islands is a comfortable option to make the travel time efficient.

Ferry & Transfer

From the ports in Samos (Pythagorio or Karlovassi) and Kos, you can reach Patmos directly in about 60 to 90 minutes using the catamarans of Dodekanisos Seaways or the large vessels of Blue Star Ferries. The ferries dock at the port of Skala, which is just a few minutes' walk from the cruise pier, making the transfer to the ship simple and direct.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the dependence on ferry schedules and weather conditions, arriving the day before is highly recommended and allows for a relaxed start to your cruise. An overnight stay in one of the owner-managed hotels in Skala also offers the opportunity to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site with the Monastery of Saint John and the historic Chora without time pressure, and to enjoy the local gastronomy at the harbor.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: during shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
