Ships dock directly in the Port of Hydra or bring their guests by tender boat straight into the vibrant center, allowing the charming harbor promenade and all local highlights to be easily reached during a relaxed stroll.
The picturesque island of Hydra, a jewel of the Saronic Gulf, is accessible exclusively by sea and is known for its car-free zone, making it a particularly relaxing travel destination. Arrival from the DACH region typically takes place by plane to Athens, followed by a comfortable ferry crossing from Piraeus.
Airplane
The nearest international airport is Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (ATH), which is served by direct flights from numerous cities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Due to the necessary onward journey to the port of Piraeus and the ferry crossing, it is recommended—especially for long-haul flights—to arrive at least one day before the planned embarkation.
Transfer and Ferry
From Athens Airport (ATH), you can easily reach the ferry port of Piraeus, the starting point for crossings to Hydra. The Metro (Blue Line 3) provides a direct connection to Piraeus station (Dimotiko Theatro Station), which is just a short walk from the ferry pier and has a travel time of about 60-70 minutes. Alternatively, the X96 express bus runs 24/7 between the airport and Piraeus, with a travel time of approximately 90 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are also available, taking you to the port in about 40-50 minutes (daytime approx. €60, nighttime €70 fixed price). Ferries to Hydra mainly depart from Piraeus from Gate E8. High-speed catamarans and Flying Dolphins from providers such as Alpha Lines, Hellenic Seaways (Blue Star Ferries), and Magic Sea Ferries operate here several times a day. The crossing to Hydra takes between 1 hour 5 minutes and 2 hours 20 minutes, depending on the type of ship. Booking ferry tickets in advance is advisable, especially during the high season. Please note that Hydra is a car-free island, so no vehicles can be taken on the ferry.
Pre-Cruise Hotel and Arrival on Hydra
An overnight stay in Athens or Piraeus before the ferry crossing to Hydra is highly recommended for a relaxed journey. Hydra itself is a unique island where motor vehicles of any kind—including cars, motorcycles, and even bicycles—are not allowed. Movement on the island is therefore exclusively on foot, by water taxi, or traditionally with mules and donkeys, which are also used for transporting luggage. The main port of Hydra is also the center of the island and offers a variety of accommodations, restaurants, and shops in the immediate vicinity.
Check-in & Embarkation

Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the shipping company and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
