Port information & tips for Heraklion (Crete)
Heraklion is the vibrant gateway to the legendary island of Crete, blending thousands of years of history with Mediterranean joie de vivre. The port city impresses with its lively atmosphere and the harmonious connection of Venetian heritage and modern Greek culture directly on the azure sea. Cultural highlights include the imposing Venetian Koules fortress at the old harbour, the magnificent Loggia, and the world-renowned Archaeological Museum with its treasures of the Minoan civilization. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Heraklion Cruise Terminal, from which the historic city centre can be easily reached in about 15 minutes on foot or via regular shuttle services to experience Cretan hospitality and the bustling activity of the old town firsthand.
The Port of Heraklion on Crete is the island's most important maritime hub and impresses with its immediate proximity to the city center as well as the international airport. The modern cruise terminal is easily accessible in the eastern part of the port and offers a service-oriented infrastructure for check-in.
Airplane
Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis (HER) is located only 4 to 5 kilometers from the port and is regularly served by direct flights from across the DACH region. The flight duration of about three hours makes Crete an ideal starting point for Mediterranean cruises, with the airport's location allowing for a quick onward journey to the terminal.
Transfer & Shuttle
Thanks to the short distance, you can reach the port area from the airport in about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or the cruise lines' organized shuttle buses. Additionally, regular public bus connections run between the airport and the central bus station, which is within easy reach of the cruise ship berths.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Arriving a day early is highly recommended due to cultural highlights such as the Palace of Knossos and the lively old town of Heraklion. Numerous hotels in the city center are located in direct proximity to the port, allowing you to reach the terminal in a relaxed manner and without time pressure on embarkation day.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
