Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Cyclades and enchants as an untouched jewel in the Aegean. The island impresses with its dramatic rocky coastline, the deep blue sea, and an authentic atmosphere that radiates peace and timeless beauty. Absolute highlights include the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, spectacularly built into the cliffs, the picturesque Chora with its winding white alleys, and the historic Kastro. Cruise ships usually dock at the pier of Katapola, which is located directly in the heart of the charming port town and offers an ideal starting point thanks to its location, while the higher-situated island capital Chora is also easily accessible in a few minutes by shuttle or taxi.
The Cycladic island of Amorgos, with its picturesque ports of Katapola and Aegiali, is primarily reached from the DACH region by plane followed by a ferry crossing. Thanks to good ferry connections from Piraeus, it is well connected, with ships alternately calling at both of the island's ports. It is advisable to check the exact arrival ports of the ferries, as the locations are situated differently on the elongated island.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region typically takes place via Athens International Airport (ATH), which offers numerous direct flights. From Athens Airport, you can easily reach the port of Piraeus, which is the starting point for the ferry crossing to Amorgos. An express bus (X96) runs every 20 minutes during the day and every 40 minutes at night from the airport's arrival area to the port of Piraeus, taking approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes for the journey. Alternatively, the Metro provides a connection from the airport to Monastiraki station, from where you can take the green Line 1 directly to Piraeus station. This journey takes about one hour. In addition, private transfer services and taxis are available, allowing for a travel time of about 45 to 60 minutes.
Ferry
Amorgos is only accessible by ship and is mainly served from the port of Piraeus near Athens. Ferry companies such as Blue Star Ferries and Seajets offer regular connections to the ports of Katapola and Aegiali on Amorgos. The crossing with a conventional ferry takes about 5.5 to 9.5 hours, depending on the route and stopovers. Faster high-speed ships require approximately 4 hours 35 minutes to 7 hours 50 minutes. There are several departures per week, with the frequency increased during the high season. It is recommended to book ferry tickets in advance online, especially during the peak season.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long ferry crossing and possible flight times, an overnight stay before embarkation is recommended. For early ferry departures from Piraeus, a hotel near the port or Athens Airport can be advantageous to reach the ferry stress-free. On Amorgos itself, the towns of Katapola and Aegiali also offer a wide selection of apartments and guesthouses, especially in the summer months. Early booking of accommodation is advisable, especially for travel in July and August.
