Port information & tips for Agios Nikolaos (Crete)

Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque jewel on the idyllic Mirabello Bay and enchants visitors as one of the most charming destinations on the Greek island of Crete. The town impresses with its relaxed atmosphere, while colorful fishing boats sway in the crystal-clear water and first-class tavernas invite you to linger. Highlights include the legendary Lake Voulismeni, located right in the heart of the town, as well as the welcoming Kitroplatia Beach and the Archaeological Museum. Cruise ships dock at the central pier of Agios Nikolaos, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the town center. Thanks to this prime location, travelers can reach the lively alleys, boutiques, and cultural sights comfortably and directly in just a few minutes on foot.

Agios Nikolaos on Crete is a charming destination for cruises, with its port centrally located in the town, ensuring convenient accessibility. Smaller cruise and luxury ships dock here, and thanks to the good connections to the nearest airport and the road network, arrival from the DACH region is straightforward. It is recommended to plan an overnight stay in advance when traveling from afar to start your cruise in a relaxed manner.

Airplane

The nearest international airport is Heraklion (HER), also known as Nikos Kazantzakis Airport. It is approximately 60 to 74 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos, with a travel time of around 50 minutes to one hour. For travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this is the most important arrival point on Crete. Sitia Airport (JSH) is closer (about 35 km) but offers fewer international flight connections.

Transfer & Shuttle

Various transfer options are available from Heraklion Airport (HER) to the port of Agios Nikolaos. The fastest and most comfortable option is a taxi or private transfer, which takes you directly to your destination in about 50 minutes. Numerous providers such as Suntransfers.com, GetYourGuide, and MyTransfers offer fixed rates for this. A more cost-effective alternative is the public bus: after a short ride from the airport to the central bus station in Heraklion, you can reach Agios Nikolaos in about one hour of travel time.

Auto & Parking

Agios Nikolaos is well-connected via the New National Road (E75), also known as the A90, along the north coast of Crete. From Heraklion, the journey takes about one hour. Parking facilities are available at the port of Agios Nikolaos as well as in the nearby marina. The Agios Nikolaos Marina offers free parking spaces for cars and trailers; additionally, there is a paid parking lot with affordable daily rates of about 3 euros, which is ideal for long-term parkers. Access to the ferry terminal is easily possible by vehicle.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
