Port information & tips for Tabuaeran (Fanning Island)
Tabuaeran, also known as Fanning Island, is a remote coral atoll in the Line Islands of Kiribati and embodies the epitome of an untouched South Sea paradise. Located in the heart of the Central Pacific, it promises an authentic atmosphere with a brilliant turquoise lagoon, shady coconut palms, and the warm hospitality of the I-Kiribati. Highlights include English Harbour with its spectacular snorkeling areas, the idyllic Napali Beach, and the local handicraft market, where delicate shell jewelry and traditional wood carvings are offered. As cruise ships anchor off the coast, guests reach English Harbour Pier comfortably by tender boat. This landing site is located directly in the main village of Paelau, allowing visitors to explore the village idyll and the dreamlike beaches on foot immediately upon arrival.

Ships anchor offshore here, and guests are brought to a simple landing site via tender boat, as there are no traditional port facilities or terminals. Direct travel by car, train, or international flights to the island is not intended for cruise guests and is logistically not feasible.
Flight Arrival to the Cruise Departure Port
Travel for guests from the DACH region usually takes place via long-haul flight to one of the major cruise departure ports in the Pacific, such as Honolulu (HNL) in Hawaii. From Frankfurt, Munich, or Zurich, direct flights are often connected with layovers, which can mean a flight time of over 15 hours. It is recommended to arrive at least one day before the scheduled embarkation to mitigate jet lag and ensure a relaxed journey.
Embarkation and Tender Transfer
From the destination airport of the departure port, you can reach the cruise terminal where your ship awaits comfortably by taxi, shuttle, or organized transfer from the cruise line. From there, embarkation for your Pacific voyage takes place. Upon arrival in Tabuaeran, your cruise ship anchors about a mile off the coast, and you will be brought ashore using smaller tender boats. The transfer to the landing site takes about 25 minutes and is weather-dependent; in heavy seas, the landing process may be discontinued.
Pre-arrival Stay and Local Features
Due to the long journey to the departure port, a pre-cruise hotel stay there is strongly recommended to start your cruise refreshed. Tabuaeran itself offers a very primitive infrastructure without paved roads, train stations, or large commercial facilities. The island has a small airport (TNV), which, however, only offers domestic flights to Christmas Island (Kiritimati, CXI) and is irrelevant for international cruise guests. On Tabuaeran, you will experience the untouched nature and the culture of the locals on foot or on local tours, as there is no public transport in the usual sense.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
