Uummannaq welcomes travelers as one of Greenland's most picturesque jewels and impresses with its spectacular location at the foot of the striking, heart-shaped Uummannaq mountain. The settlement enchants with its brightly colored wooden houses set against a backdrop of glistening icebergs, while offering a deep insight into the authentic Arctic way of life. Cultural highlights include the Uummannaq Museum in a historic building and the striking stone church, while short hikes to the legendary "Santa Claus House" provide unforgettable views. As cruise ships usually lie at anchor, landing takes place by tender boat directly at the central pier of Uummannaq. From there, all the sights and charming alleys of the town are easily reachable on foot in just a few minutes.
Uummannaq, a remote island town in Greenland, is only accessible by air and sea, as there are no road or rail connections to other settlements. Cruise ships usually anchor in the bay, with transfers to Uummannaq Heliport or the harbor provided by tender boat. The small town itself can be easily explored on foot.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region typically involves international flights to Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) or Nuuk (GOH), Greenland's main gateways. During the summer months, there are also direct flights from Reykjavik (Keflavik or domestic) to Ilulissat (JAV). From there, you will continue your journey with Air Greenland, the primary domestic provider, to Qaarsut (JQA). Qaarsut Airport is located on the Nuussuaq Peninsula, about 20 kilometers from Uummannaq Island. The flight time from Ilulissat to Qaarsut is approximately 55 minutes.
Local Transfers
After arriving at Qaarsut Airport (JQA), a helicopter transfer will take you directly to Uummannaq Heliport (UMD), located in the town. These helicopter flights are offered year-round by Air Greenland and take about 15 minutes. Alternatively, during the summer months, there is the option of a boat transfer from Qaarsut to Uummannaq, which takes about 30 minutes and is operated by local providers. Please note that the availability of these transfers is highly dependent on weather and ice conditions.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the remote location and potential weather dependence, which can lead to flight delays, arrival at least one day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise and provides buffer time for unforeseen travel interruptions. It is recommended to plan an overnight stay in Ilulissat, from where the onward journey to Qaarsut and Uummannaq takes place. Hotel capacities in Uummannaq itself are limited.
