Narsaq is a colorful jewel in southern Greenland and is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in the Arctic. Outstanding sights include the history-steeped Narsaq Museum in the old colonial quarter and the A-vannut craft workshop, while nature lovers can admire the region's fascinating geology on hikes to Qaqqarsuaq. Cruise ships use the central pier at Narsaq Harbor, which is located directly in the village and offers passengers a convenient, short walk into the charming center as well as to local shops and cafes.
Narsaq in South Greenland is an idyllic and small port whose accessibility differs significantly from typical European or American cruise ports. There are no classic terminals with direct road or rail connections; arrival is primarily by plane followed by onward travel within Greenland. Early arrival the day before is strongly recommended due to the remote location and the often weather-dependent means of transport.
Plane (International Arrival)
Travel from the DACH region usually takes place via international flights to Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) or Nuuk (GOH), Greenland's two largest airports. Direct flights from Europe to Greenland are primarily available from Copenhagen (CPH) and partly from Iceland. Airlines such as SAS, Icelandair, and Air Greenland offer good connections for long-haul flights to Copenhagen or Reykjavik. From Kangerlussuaq or Nuuk, you then continue with Air Greenland to Narsarsuaq Airport (UAK), the most important regional hub for South Greenland, or directly by helicopter to Narsaq.
Onward Travel within Greenland
From Narsarsuaq Airport (UAK), which is located about 50 kilometers north of Narsaq, you can reach Narsaq by helicopter or boat. Air Greenland offers regular helicopter flights to the heliport in Narsaq, providing a fast and spectacular connection. Alternatively, boat connections exist, which can vary depending on weather and schedule and often take longer. It is advisable to book these domestic connections early and to plan sufficient buffer time for possible weather-related delays.
Pre-Arrival & Overnight Stay
Due to the complex journey and the potential weather dependency of domestic flights and boat connections, arriving in Greenland at least one day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to the cruise and minimizes the risk of missing the ship. Hotels and guesthouses are available in Narsarsuaq and Narsaq, though selection is limited and early booking is advisable. An overnight stay also offers the opportunity to experience the unique nature and culture of South Greenland even before the cruise begins.
