Kullorsuaq is one of Greenland's most remote and authentic settlements, located on the edge of the impressive Melville Bay. This magical place captivates with its dramatic backdrop of gigantic icebergs and its deep roots in traditional Inuit culture. Highlights include hikes to the striking, eponymous Kullorsuaq mountain, visiting the charming wooden church, and gaining authentic insights into the lives of local hunters. Expedition ships use the small local pier in the heart of the settlement for shore excursions, which is reached safely by Zodiac. Thanks to this central location, the colorful wooden houses and all sights are within direct walking distance, allowing guests an immediate and intense immersion into the fascinating Arctic solitude.
Kullorsuaq in Greenland is not a conventional cruise port, but rather a remote expedition destination that is reached exclusively by tender boat, as there are no piers or terminal buildings. Arrival requires careful planning and takes place primarily by air and sea.
Airplane (International Arrival)
For travelers from the DACH region, the journey to Greenland usually begins with flights to the international airports of Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) or Nuuk (GOH). Direct flight connections are available from Copenhagen. From these Greenlandic hubs, travel continues to smaller regional airports. Arriving at the main airport of your Greenland expedition ideally one day before the scheduled embarkation is recommended to account for delays and ensure a relaxed journey.
Onward journey by heli or ship
Kullorsuaq itself is so remote that there are no road connections. After arriving in Greenland, for example via the regional airport Upernavik (JUV), which is located about 203 kilometers south of Kullorsuaq, the journey continues to the destination. Air Greenland offers helicopter flights from Upernavik to Kullorsuaq twice a week to cover the final leg. Alternatively, or depending on the season, arrival can also take place by small ship or boat. Cruise ships anchor in Melville Bay, and guests are then brought ashore by zodiacs.
Pre-arrival & Embarkation
Since Kullorsuaq is not a departure port for cruises, but is only visited during the voyage, embarkation usually takes place in larger Greenlandic ports such as Kangerlussuaq or Nuuk, or even in ports outside of Greenland. Due to the long travel times and the potential weather dependency of local transfers, an overnight stay in the city of the embarkation port at least one day before the start of your expedition is strongly recommended. This way, you start your journey relaxed and well-prepared for this unique Arctic experience.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
