Port information & tips for Imerigsoq (Kronprinsen Island)
The Kronprinsen Islands, also known as Imerigsoq, are a fascinating natural jewel in Greenland's historic Disko Bay and offer an authentic Arctic experience. This remote archipelago impresses with an untouched landscape of dramatic basalt formations and vast tundra that glows in soft colors during the summer. Special highlights include the historical remains of former whaling stations and spectacular views of the surrounding majestic icebergs. As there is no conventional pier, landings are made by Zodiac directly on the natural shores of Imerigsoq. Thanks to this direct connection to the wilderness, adventurers can explore the striking rocky coastlines and Arctic flora and fauna on foot directly from the landing point.
The Kronprinsen Islands (Imerigsoq) in Greenland are a unique destination primarily visited as part of expedition cruises. Direct travel to a terminal, as is common in large European ports, is not possible as the island itself does not have the corresponding infrastructure. Instead, your journey begins at the starting point of your Greenland cruise, which will then take you to the picturesque Kronprinsen Islands.
Airplane
Travel to Greenland from the DACH region typically takes place by plane via Copenhagen (CPH) in Denmark or Keflavík (KEF) near Reykjavík in Iceland. Air Greenland offers regular flights from Copenhagen to the Greenlandic airports of Nuuk (GOH) and Kangerlussuaq (SFJ). Icelandair also connects Keflavík with Nuuk, Ilulissat (JAV), and seasonally with other Greenlandic destinations. The new international airport in Nuuk (GOH) opened at the end of 2024 and is now a major hub for Greenland flights, while a new airport in Qaqortoq (JJU) will improve connections in the south in April 2026. Plan for a flight time of about four hours from Copenhagen to Nuuk, and around three and a half hours from Keflavík to Nuuk.
Transfer to the Embarkation Point
Since the Kronprinsen Islands themselves do not offer traditional docking facilities for larger cruise ships, embarkation for cruises visiting these islands usually takes place in larger Greenlandic towns such as Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq, or even in Reykjavík, Iceland. From the destination airports in Greenland, you can then comfortably reach the respective embarkation port by taxi or through organized transfers provided by the cruise lines. Payment with standard credit cards is easily possible at Greenlandic airports and in most locations, including taxis.
Pre-Cruise Stay
Due to long travel times and the possibility of weather-related flight delays, it is strongly recommended to arrive at the departure point of your Greenland cruise at least one day before the scheduled embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your adventure and minimizes stress. Many travelers choose a pre-cruise stay in Copenhagen, Reykjavík, or directly in the Greenlandic town where the cruise begins.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
