Etah is a legendary arrival point in the far north of Greenland and is considered the historic gateway to the Arctic. Its secluded location in Foulke Fjord impresses with an untouched wilderness of rugged cliffs, majestic glaciers, and profound silence. Highlights include the gigantic colonies of little auks as well as the archaeological remains of old Thule settlements, which offer fascinating insights into Inuit history. As there is no permanent infrastructure on site, expedition ships anchor in the sheltered Foulke Fjord and use Zodiacs for shore excursions to the natural banks of Etah. This direct access allows travelers to explore the uninhabited Arctic landscape and its wildlife directly from the landing site.
Etah, a former settlement in the far north of Greenland, is today a very remote destination for expedition cruises. A "port" in the traditional sense does not exist; landing is carried out exclusively by Zodiac, as there is no direct road or rail connection to this far northern location.
Airplane
Travel to Greenland from the DACH region is usually by plane via Copenhagen (CPH) or Reykjavík (KEF). From there, onward flights are available to larger Greenlandic airports such as Kangerlussuaq (SFJ), Nuuk (GOH), or Ilulissat (JAV). Etah itself does not have an airport. The nearest airfields are Qaanaaq (NAQ) or Pituffik Space Base (THU), which are primarily used for local traffic or special logistics. Direct travel to Etah by plane is not possible, as the location is uninhabited and onward travel from these northern airports to Etah takes place exclusively as part of organized expeditions.
Arrival by Expedition Ship
Etah is reached almost exclusively as part of expedition cruises. The ships usually anchor at sea, and guests are then landed comfortably and safely using special Zodiacs or tender boats. These expeditions often start from international hubs such as Reykjavík (Iceland) or Longyearbyen (Spitsbergen), or from Greenlandic ports such as Kangerlussuaq. Thanks to these specialized ship voyages, this unique and remote region of Greenland can be explored comfortably.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long international flights to Greenland and the necessary transfer times to the expedition ship, an overnight stay in the ship's departure city is highly recommended. Whether in Reykjavík, Copenhagen, or Kangerlussuaq, a pre-cruise hotel stay allows for a relaxed start to your adventure and provides a valuable buffer for any flight delays before you board your expedition ship.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Please plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
