Port information & tips for Schnackenburg
Schnackenburg is an idyllic jewel on the Elbe and, as the smallest town in Lower Saxony, marks a fascinating stop within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape. The town impresses with its picturesque riverside location and offers a relaxing stay thanks to its quiet atmosphere and vast natural landscapes. Cultural highlights include the informative Grenzlandmuseum Schnackenburg on German-German history, the historic St. Nicolai Kirche, and extensive hiking trails through the untouched Elbe floodplains. Ships dock at the central Schiffsanleger Schnackenburg, located directly on the edge of the historic town center. From this pier, travelers can easily reach the center and all sights within a few minutes' walk, allowing for an uncomplicated and inspiring shore excursion.
The port of Schnackenburg, idyllically situated on the Elbe, is a charming destination for river cruise ships and, thanks to its good connections from the DACH region, is easily accessible by car, train, or even in combination with a flight. The manageable terminal structure allows for a relaxed embarkation.
Car
Schnackenburg is excellently connected to the federal highway network, allowing you to reach the port optimally. From the east-west direction, you can reach the region via the A24 motorway, and from the north-south direction via the A14. Currently, the closing of the gap on the A14 near Wittenberge is being further advanced, which will additionally optimize the journey. Furthermore, federal roads such as the B189 lead directly into the vicinity. On-site, free parking is available directly at the Elbhafen/Zollhafen Schnackenburg, which is also ideal for longer stays.
Train
The nearest train stations are located in Wittenberge (approximately 30 kilometers away) and Dannenberg (Ost). Both are well-connected to the regional and national rail networks. From Wittenberge, you can easily reach Schnackenburg with the Prignitzbus, which operates as a regular service or call-a-bus, often via Lenzen. There are also corresponding bus connections from Dannenberg that will take you directly to the port. It is recommended to check the current timetables of Deutsche Bahn for precise planning.
Airplane
Several airports are available for international guests or those with longer travel distances. Rostock-Laage Airport (RLG) is the closest airport at about 107 kilometers. Alternatively, you can fly into Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) at a distance of around 115 to 137 kilometers or Hamburg Airport (HAM) at approximately 135 kilometers. From these airports, onward travel by train to the Wittenberge or Dannenberg stations and then by bus or taxi to Schnackenburg is recommended. Due to individual arrival times, a relaxed overnight stay in the region beforehand can be advantageous for a smooth start to your river cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
