Port information & tips for Saarburg

Saarburg is a picturesque jewel on the winding Saar and stands out as a charming destination for river cruises in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz. The city enchants visitors with its romantic atmosphere of historic half-timbered houses, steep vineyards, and its nickname "Little Venice". Fascinating highlights in the immediate vicinity include the spectacular 20-meter-high waterfall in the city center, the majestic Saarburg castle ruins, and the traditional Museum Glockengießerei Mabilon. Cruise ships dock directly at the ship pier on the banks of the Saar, which is located in a very central position. From here, the idyllic old town can be explored on foot in just a few minutes thanks to short distances, guaranteeing a comfortable and inspiring stay.

Saarburg, a charming town on the Saar, is a popular starting point for river cruises and is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to good transport links. The ship pier is centrally located in Saarburg's Altstadt in the Staden area and is well signposted.

Car

The journey to Saarburg is straightforward via the B51 or B419 federal roads. Various parking options are available on-site. In the extended city center area, which includes the ship pier and the Cityparkplatz (Zone 2), you can park for €0.30 per 20 minutes, with day tickets available for €2.50 at the Cityparkplatz and monthly tickets for €30. For long-term parkers, Zone 3 (station area) is recommended, offering day tickets for €2, weekly tickets for €8, and monthly tickets for €30, which is ideal for the duration of a river cruise.

Train

Saarburg has its own railway station ("Saarburg (Bz Trier)"), located on the Trier-Saarbrücken line, offering good regional connections. From the station, you can easily reach the ship pier on foot. Follow the signs through the underpass towards the town center, cross the Altstadtbrücke/Saarbrücke, and after about 500 meters, you will arrive directly at the pier. The total distance from the station to the pier is about 1 kilometer.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Luxembourg Airport (LUX), approximately 37 kilometers away. From there, you can take shuttle bus no. 16 to Luxembourg Central Station (approx. 15-20 minutes), then a train to Trier (approx. 55-60 minutes), and finally a train to Saarburg (approx. 17-25 minutes). As an alternative for long-haul flights, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is available; although it is about 153 kilometers away, it offers international direct connections from all over the world. Arriving the evening before with an overnight stay in Saarburg can ensure a relaxed start to your river cruise.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
